4-H Members Showcase Food Exhibits

Updated: Wednesday, July 23 2014, 05:30 PM CDT

This week is the moment of truth for 4-H members.
Over 50, participants ages eight through 18 gathered here at the University of Illinois Extention Office, Tuesday to show off their best recipes.

Judges select winners from 4 different categories; from cooking 101, which includes basic cookies and rice crispy treats, to cooking 401
with more advanced projects like International Rye bread and food preservation.

4-h Coordinator, Samantha Rusk, says the skills don't stop with food preparation.

"They're learning how to cook, they're learning how to bake so simple life skills," Rusk said.  "But then there's so much more to it as well they're
learning about speaking with adults on how to answer questions properly, how to interact with others."

At the end of each exhibit show, judges select up to eight Best-In-Prize winners. Those selected go on to showcase their presentations at the state fair in August.
