Cities Flood After Fast, Heavy Rains

Updated: Monday, July 14 2014, 10:20 AM CDT

Crews with the Champaign Public Works Department spent much of Saturday clearing water from neighborhoods throughout the city.

Nearly five inches of rain fell during Saturday mornings storm. Crews work to clear streets, drains and flooded basements. Reps are hoping to have most streets cleared -- or at least safely blocked off -- by 9 p.m. Saturday night.

City officials say streets east of Prospect, north of Springfield and south of Bradley were hit hardest. Around 5 p.m. they said most of the water was drying out. With threat of more
rain, they're warning drivers to avoid standing water--especially under viaducts.
