Medical Marijuana in Champaign-Urbana

Updated: Tuesday, August 5 2014, 10:02 AM CDT

Urbana city council discussing tonight if they will amending several zoning ordinances that would clear the way for companies to set up shop.

The state will grant only 2 licenses for sellers to set up shop in the 9 county district that includes Champaign-Urbana.

The state's medical marijuana law won't allow dispensaries within 1,000 feet of schools, daycare facilities, and residential zones; for cultivating centers it's a 2,500 foot buffer, so there are limited areas to build or buy existing buildings.

Now this is all about medical marijuana, not recreational marijuana.
That means that the sales and tax revenue like what's being seen in Colorado in recent months is unlikely, but an investor who addressed council tonight estimated annual revenue for the city to top $100,000.

Before any facilities can open they would still need to apply for and be granted:
       - permits with the city
       - a state license
       - and pass inspections.
