19-year-old killed in Champaign shooting
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCCU) —
The Champaign County Coroner has identified the victim of a deadly shooting early this morning as 19-year-old Brandon Smith. He was pronounced dead at Carle Hospital around 2:30 a.m. Friday.
Champaign where police say they had officers patrolling the area early Friday morning when they heard gun shots coming from this apartment complex on the 1200 block of McKinley Avenue. When police arrived on the scene they found the victim with life threatening gunshot wounds. They got him to the hospital quickly, it they were unable to save his life.
Champaign police say they're interviewing witnesses to try to piece together what happened.
At this time there have been no arrests and police do not have a suspect description to give to the public.
"It's never a pleasant thing, you know,” Champaign Police Lieutenant David Shaffer said. “Tt's obviously what we have to go do and try to find some closure for the family and bring the individual or individuals responsible to the court. But seeing somebody that's life has ended at such an early age is certainly troubling."
Police say so far their investigation does not lead them to believe the shooting was gang related.
