Two teens from Jasper County have been arrested in connection with the shooting deaths of five American White Pelicans.

The birds were found shot dead in Newton Lake in Illinois.

Charges against the two teens were filed on April 14.

The teens are facing charges of unlawful take of migratory waterfowl with a rifle, unlawful discharge of a firearm from a public roadway, unlawful firing of a rifle over/into waters of the state and unlawfully disturbing/harassing wild birds by the use of aid of a motor vehicle. All of the charges are misdemeanor state charges.

The birds are protected by the federal Migratory Bird Act and by state law.
