Alaysia Bennett's family hopes for justice following new arrests in case
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WRSP) —
It’s been ten months since the death of 19-year-old Alaysia Bennett.
Bennett was killed in December while in the parking lot of Georgetown Townhomes.
Two men were arrested in connection with Bennett’s death.
On Tuesday, 26-year-old Roderick Gailes was arrested, 24-year-old Devante Taylor was picked up last week.
On Thursday, Taylor had his first court appearance, the judge set his bond at $2 million.
Bennett’s family attended Taylor’s first court appearance.
They said it brings the family one step closer to closure.
“Hopeful we'll start to get some of the answers that we've been waiting ten months for," said Adrienne Bennett, the mother of Alaysia Bennett.
Adrienne Bennett said her daughter was just in the wrong place, at the wrong time.
“It makes me feel like why her, why did she have to be in that spot at that time,” Adrienne Bennett said.
Taylor is charged with two counts of first-degree murder, attempted armed robbery and aggravated discharge of a firearm. His next court appearance is October 26.
Gailes’ court date is October 13.
