Car Stolen in Rantoul with 3 Kids Inside
RANTOUL, Ill. (WCCU) —
Three kids are now safe after a man steals a vehicle with them inside.
Rantoul police say they were dispatched to JW Eater Junior High School around 10 a.m. Thursday for a stolen vehicle with three small children (ages: 9 months, 5, and 9) inside.
After 25 minutes of searching, police found the children near Veteran's Parkway and Chanute Street. We're told they were visibly shaken, but physically unharmed. Police later discovered the suspect had dropped the children off near the Rantoul Youth Center and told them to call the police.
An investigator located the vehicle as it was traveling south on the Potomac-Collison Rd in Vermillion County. As the vehicle entered Oakwood, a vehicle stop was conducted. The subject was taken into custody without incident.
The subject was identified as Kevin Lefever, 18, of the 200 block of Winding Lane in Rantoul. Lefever was taken to the Champaign County Correctional Center on charges of Motor Vehicle Theft and Child Endangerment. Lefever was the same person arrested on June 12, 2017 for Motor Vehicle Theft stemming from an incident in Rantoul.
Lefever said he stole the vehicle without knowing the children were inside. After realizing they were in there he dropped them off at the Rantoul Youth Center. Lefever said he planned on driving the stolen vehicle to Fort Wayne, IN.
Rantoul Police Department received assistance during this investigation from the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office, Gifford Police Department, Vermillion County Sheriff’s Office and the Oakwood Police Department.
