Central Illinois volunteers back home after driving community donations to Texas
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WRSP) —
Volunteers from central Illinois are back home, after driving down to Texas to help the victims of Hurricane Harvey.
Eight volunteers from Spaulding and other local police and fire departments, drove four trucks down last week.
The convoy drove straight through without stopping to rest.
The donations were delivered to the city of Rockport, the spot Harvey first made landfall.
They also dropped off some items in Houston.
“Once we got down toward Rockport, Texas, that area, it's completely devastated,” Spaulding Police Chief Jim Hillyer said. “Very few buildings still standing, very few trees still upright, no power, no water, just absolutely devastating.”
Hillyer said while the donations they collected did help, areas hit by Harvey are still in need of much more.
