Chatham named one of the safest cities in Illinois
CHATHAM, Ill. (WRSP) —
The Village of Chatham has been named one of the top 20 safest cities in Illinois.
In contrast, Springfield ranked 201st out of 206.
The rankings came from the National Council for Home Safety and Security.
The council ranked cities based on their amounts of violent crimes, property crimes, as well as how many of each occurred per 1,000 people in the area.
Chatham Police credits their community relations for helping to keep the area safe.
"We've seen a pretty steady amount of both there's not really been an increase of any kind over the last several years,” Chatham Police Deputy Scott Tarter said. “We work with our community so we try to do what we can to get out there in the community and be proactive."
The safest cities are chosen based on recent FBI crime report statistics.
Cities with populations under 10,000 people are not eligible.
