Community mourns the possible loss of missing U of I scholar

It’s been three weeks since Yingying Zhang, the missing University of Illinois scholar, was kidnapped.

On Friday, law enforcement arrested 28-year-old Brendt Christensen, for the alleged kidnapping of Zhang.

Law enforcement said they have presumed Zhang is no longer alive.

“It is very devastating." said Daniel Kim, student at U of I. "Because everyone was really trying to spread awareness as to what happened to get her found."

Throughout Zhang’s disappearance the community remained hopeful Yingying was still alive. Now people who live in the area said hope has turned to sadness.

“It’s super sad they haven’t found her," said Claire Cowser who lives near the campus. "They don’t know for sure where she is, it’s very sad to me."

Cowser said since Zhang’s kidnapping she no longer feels safe outside. She is making sure she keeps her doors locked at all times, as well as only going out in pairs.
