Cops Move Indoors for Special Olympics
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCCU) —
You may have noticed more law enforcement officers out Friday morning while grabbing your morning coffee.
Officers were stationed at several area Dunkin’ Donuts to collect money for Special Olympics. Typically, officers get on top of the roof to get people to come by and donate, but they were not able to do that Friday because of the lightning.
"We are just trying to give the very best opportunity for them to get out and enjoy athletics and participate in sports,” University of Illinois Police Officer Beth Visel said. “We've actually got some really amazing athletes here in Champaign County that we've come to know very near and dear to our hearts, so it's pretty incredible to fundraise for them."
Coming up on June 9, law enforcement will participate in a Torch Run, where officers will run from Fisher to Urbana to start the summer games.
