Champaign-Urbana is one of 25 communities selected to receive an immigration strategy award.

The award is given out jointly by the New American Economy and Gateway for Growth organizations.

To win the award, cities must demonstrate how they welcome immigrants into society.

Those selected for the recognition will also get resources to help further their mission.

"Really identifying a number of pathways that we can work to make immigrants feel more part of our community,” the University of Illinois YMCA Director Mike Doyle said. “But equally important is making our community a welcoming community, one that is receptive to immigrants and so that we're a good receiving community."

The University of Illinois YMCA is taking this time to showcase its New American Welcome Center, designed to help local immigrants integrate into society.
