Dads fight for 50/50 child custody bill
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WRSP) —
Some Illinois dads are fighting for equal custody of their children by working to pass an equal parenting bill.
If House Bill 4113 were to pass, it’d ask courts to award equal custody after a divorce or separation.
Fathers, like Ernesto Johnson of Springfield, support the bill.
The reason? Research shows children do better academically, socially, and mentally if they spend time with both parents.
Johnson, who's a father of two, is currently separated from his youngest's mother.
While they have shared custody, the time isn't equally split.
“[My son] doesn't understand the situation of course,” Johnson said. “There's no reason why our conflict or our inability to work things out should weigh against his needs and that's what House Bill 4113 is all about.”
This legislation is in its beginning stages.
No action has been taken on it since it was introduced in the House in October.
