Family of Yingying Zhang dispel rumors about GoFundMe
URBANA, Ill. (WCCU) —
The family of missing University of Illinois scholar, Yingying Zhang is speaking out to clear up some rumors about their GoFundMe.
A family friend, Emily Lux said in recent weeks, a lot of hateful rumors have been spreading about the family's fundraiser. She said almost all of the comments on the GoFundMe were coming from the Chinese media.
Some rumored that the family was hiding Yingying and using the money for their own benefit, while others said the entire missing case is a conspiracy, but Lux said the rumors are all lies.
“When we think about how these comments affect the family in so many different ways as far as financially, but also for their safety it’s just been horrifying for the family and they felt very isolated because of this,” Lux said.
Lux said the U of I helped Yingying's family organize the GoFundMe in order to help support them during a difficult time. She said the family is using the money raised for living expenses, visas and are hoping to use it for a private investigator. To learn more about the fundraiser, click here.
