IDOT closure causing 20,000 workers to lose jobs
SPRINGFIELD, ILL. (WRSP) —
Drivers in Illinois will start to see the effects on the road, due to Illinois not passing a budget by the start of the fiscal year on July 1. On Friday, the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) was forced to close due to a lack of funding.
Staff with IDOT said they instructed all workers to stop working on projects by midnight. This is causing around 20,000 construction workers to lose their job.
“A lot of people are employed with IDOT, a lot of people,” said Jim Bruner, with United Contractors Midwest.
Any roads closed due to construction will stay that way for an unknown amount of time.
“It could push jobs that should have been completed this year into next year,” Bruner said.
IDOT said they do not know when they will be able to reopen.
