Illinois teachers eligible for new tax credit
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WRSP) —
Illinois teachers are now eligible for a new state tax credit for buying instructional materials and supplies.
This new credit for teachers is worth up to $250. It’s in addition to the current $250 federal deduction.
It's available to teachers, principals or aides in qualified schools.
School officials said they often spend a lot of their own money in their classrooms.
They said this credit will help them provide a great classroom experience for their students.
"Whatever districts give them, we give $100 per classroom for teachers to use, they use much more than that,” Waverly Schools Superintendent Dustin Day said. “A lot of the time they're using their own money to supply the difference of what they want in their classroom and what we can actually give."
Teachers in both private and public schools can apply for the credit.
To be eligible, you must work at least 900 hours during a school year.
