Law school deans debate campus free speech at U of I
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCCU/WICS) —
The U of I Chancellor’s' critical conversation series continued Tuesday on the topic of free speech.
University of California Berkley Law School Dean Erwin Chemerinsky and former University of Chicago Law School Dean Geoffrey Stone debated the limits of free speech on a university campus.
The two experts talked about protests on campus grounds and how the university should involve itself.
"It is the role of the university to enable students, faculty, and community members to air ideas to challenge themselves to hear arguments made that they might find uncomfortable and to let them find out for themselves what they should and should not believe," said Geoffrey Stone, former law school dean for the University of Chicago.
The experts also talked about the history of freedom of speech and the difference between protected and unprotected speech.
