Local volunteers return from a weekend of helping in Houston
CHAMPAIGN, ILL. (WCCU) —
An update on a group of volunteers from Champaign County that spent Labor Day Weekend in Houston helping those impacted by the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey.
Olivia Triplett and her friends headed back to Central Illinois Monday night, after what she said was an exhausting but rewarding weekend.
Triplett said there was less standing water than they expected in Houston, but there was a lot of clean up to be done.
She and her friends spent the days stripping houses that had taken in more than four feet of water during the storm.
In addition to volunteering their time, the group donated supplies, like clothing and baby formula, to Houston families.
Triplett said having the chance to help these survivors was an emotional experience.
"They were extremely blessed and grateful,” Triplett said about the families they helped while in Houston. “They just kept saying ‘thank you, thank you.’ And some of them cried, and it just made us cry.”
Triplett said there is still so much need in Houston, and hopes others will continue to donate and help in whatever way possible.
