Macon County warns of fake Ameren Illinois calls
MACON COUNTY, Ill. (WRSP) —
Law enforcement agencies in Macon County have been getting several calls from businesses regarding phone calls allegedly from Ameren Illinois telling them that their power bill has not been paid. The callers are telling the business that immediate payment is needed & can be paid by using prepaid debit cards. The caller indicates if payment is not received, the power to the business will be shut off. THIS IS A SCAM! Do not fall for this and simply hang up. Ameren Corporation will never demand payment by prepaid cards.
If a business or individual has received this call, they need to contact Ameren Illinois directly at 1.800.755.5000. If they have given money to these scammers, we urge them to contact their local law enforcement agency to file a report after they contact Ameren Illinois.
