A woman is behind bars in connection with her child's death.

According to the Charleston Police Department, Savannah Weiss, 22, allegedly left her child in a playpen unattended from Friday, December 1 to Sunday, December 3.

The Champaign County Coroner's office revealed the preliminary cause of death to be due to dehydration and malnourishment.

Weiss was charged with first-degree murder on Thursday.

Later that day, Coles County State’s Attorney Brian Bower held a press conference revealing new and disturbing details from the ongoing investigation.

"During this time the child was left unattended confined to this playpen with two peanut butter jelly sandwiches and a vitamin bottle with a needle sized hole poked into the cap, " Bower said.

A former babysitter for the 2-year-old boy, Emily Snively, was at the press conference.

"He was a normal little boy,” Snively said. “He was sweet, liked to cuddle and be loved on. He played with my little boy."

Snively said she didn’t know Weiss that well, but was still shocked to learn of her arrest.

"I never suspected her being anything but a good mother,” Snively said.

Weiss is being held in the Coles County Safety and Detention.

She is due back in court on December 11.
