Neighbor of suspect in the kidnapping of Yingying Zhang reacts to his arrest
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WRSP) —
The suspect accused of kidnapping Chinese scholar Yingying Zhang was arrested in Champaign at the Stonegate Village Apartments, on Friday.
28-year-old Brendt Christensen of Champaign is accused of kidnapping Zhang.
The Department of Justice says Zhang is presumed dead.
According to an affidavit, Christensen was under FBI surveillance when agents overheard him saying he kidnapped Zhang.
The FBI says Christensen was driving the black Saturn Astra that Zhang was last seen getting into when she disappeared on June 9th.
Christensen is in custody, pending his initial federal court appearance in Urbana on Monday, July 3rd.
One of Christensen’s neighbors, Derek Curtis says he and other residents have seen the Saturn Astra before, but never expected on of their neighbors to be arrested on such a serious charge.
