Online sales to blame for businesses closing around town
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WRSP) —
Over the years, Springfield has seen several businesses leave the area, most recently Kmart and Staples.
Some economically blighted neighborhoods, such as north Springfield, have lost a lot of local business.
Increased internet sales are often blamed for lower local sales tax revenue.
Springfield Mayor, Jim Langfelder points out that the city has a lot of unique businesses that have opened in recent years.
“That's what people will start migrating to are those shopping experiences that can be created in your downtowns or certain areas of your town, and not necessarily in the realm of your pc computer,” said Springfield Mayor, Jim Langfelder.
Langfelder said big projects like the proposed natural gas facility near Pawnee will eventually pull the city out of an impending budget shortfall.
