Arrested U of I Football Players Told Not to Leave State
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCCU) —
Three University of Illinois football players appeared in arraignment court Thursday.
Darta Lee, Howard Watkins, and Zarrian Holcombe, joined the courtroom via satellite from the Champaign County Jail.
All three players have bond set at $150,000 and are not allowed to leave the state as part of the agreement.
The three were arrested Wednesday, facing charges of home invasion and armed robbery in a dorm room in Bromley Hall on U of I’s campus. During the arraignment, those charges were reduced from a Class X Felony to a Class 1 Felony. If convicted, they could face four to 15 years in prison.
Champaign County State's Attorney Julia Riets says this was appropriate because the incident did not result in any injuries and the weapon used turned out to be a BB gun.
The three appeared before Associate Judge Brett Olmstead.
To be released from jail, each player would need to post 10 percent bail, or $15,000. The judge also banned the players from making contact with the victim.
Howard Watkins is set to reappear in this court room Friday with his new representation. The rest will have a court appearance on June 27.
