University of Illinois enrollment down in Springfield, up overall
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WRSP) —
Total enrollment at the University of Illinois Springfield is down by about 500 students from the fall of 2016.
After the first 10 days of classes, the total number of students at the Springfield campus hovered around 5,000. A total of 4,956 students were enrolled at UIS. That’s down from 5,428 students in the fall of 2016.
Undergraduate enrollment is down by 27 students.
Graduate enrollment is down by 445.
This could because UIS has 420 fewer international graduate students this year compared to last.
"We have a tremendous number of students who come to study computer science and management information systems from India and those students are telling us they're concerned about their ability to travel back and forth since the presidential election,” UIS Chancellor Susan Koch said. “They're worried about the sense of their feeling welcome in the United States."
The University of Illinois Chicago's total enrollment grew by 4.9 percent this year compared to last.
The Urbana-Champaign campus's total enrollment increased 3 percent.
Combined at all three campuses, total enrollment increased by 2.9 percent.
