Veterinarians warn about illnesses spreading in dog parks
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCCU) —
Local veterinarians are advising dog owners to stay away from dog parks.
Vets said there have been multiple cases of respiratory illness in the Champaign-Urbana area.
Even dogs who received the kennel cough vaccine are in danger, however, their symptoms may not be as severe.
Symptoms include a mild cough, fever, lack of appetite, and fatigue.
SportsVet Animal Medical Center said they have seen 20 cases since Thanksgiving.
"We have run into a couple of pet owners where they have a dog that’s sick and it's like if you have multiple kids at home,” Dr. Dayle Dillon, Associate Vet with SportsVet Animal Medical Center said. “One kid gets sick then usually everyone gets it. It's kind of the same thing if we run into one dog that has gotten sick, it's not uncommon that potentially the other dog can develop some cough and some lethargy as well.”
Dillon said this isn't something dog owners need to get too worried about but to pay attention to the symptoms.
Most of the signs go away within three to five days.
