The Dish with Dee Dee: Greasy Goodness
Two greasy hot burgers in one brown paper sack.
Pam Edwards dishes it out every day at this mom-and-pop style restaurant, Krekel’s Custard & Hamburgers.
“People over the years have joked - you know it's from Krekel’s, because when people carry it out [of] the building, the grease is already coming through the bag."
Edwards’ grandfather started the tradition in Decatur, opening the first store in 1949.
“Right now we are proud to say this is the oldest location that my grandfather started many years ago,” Edwards says of the store on Wood Street.
“Everything we do today is exactly what he did, and how he wanted it.”
Edwards says they could sell anywhere from seven to eight hundred burgers on a typical day.
“We cook to order, so nothing is prepared ahead of time.”
Walk up and order one of their signature thin and crispy burgers, crinkle-cut fries, and a delicious shake.
Simple never tasted so sweet!
“It’s great to be part of something that's been around for many years, and I'm really proud of that."
Krekel’s currently has 8 locations in Decatur, Springfield, Pawnee, Mt. Zion and Champaign.
