Champaign police arrest shooting suspect

Champaign police arrested 19-year-old Reonte Williams, of Champaign, as a suspect in a shooting on June 15 that left an 18-year-old male injured with multiple gunshot wounds.

Based on police investigation, the victim and Williams, who were part of an ongoing dispute, were in the 300 block of East Hill Street when Williams allegedly shot the victim at close range and again as the victim fled the scene.

Officers who were in the area at the time of the incident were flagged down by the victim who was later transported to an area hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

Champaign Police authorized a search warrant at a residence in the 300 block of E. Church Street in Champaign, where Williams was arrested without incident for the offenses of attempted murder and unlawful use of a weapon.

Williams was transported to the Champaign County Jail where he is pending arraignment.

During the search of the residence, police uncovered three handguns, ammunition and suspected cannabis.
