Deadly Champaign shooting near Elm Street and Beardsley Avenue
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCCU) —
Angela Evans says she was driving home Thursday night when she saw something out of the corner of her eye.
"As I was driving down Bradley Street I saw a person fall and so my kind nature thought that maybe someone was drunk or in need of medical attention,” Evans said.
She then realized a man had been shot. Later police discovered that man was 53-year-old Gus Evans of Champaign. He was later pronounced dead at Carle Hospital.
Deparius Smith was with Edwards' brother when he arrived at the scene.
"It was kind of sad watching him,” Smith said. “Like I was with him down the street there. He was crying and stuff, yelling, and basically just really in the heat of emotion."
Now Champaign police are looking for the person responsible and are asking for the community's help.
"Right now we have some limited information,” Champaign Police Lieutenant David Shaffer said. “So we're in the process of speaking with people and looking into other avenues of information that would help us further this investigation. So one of the main sources of information are people that may have saw it or have some information that may be relevant."
One piece of evidence police are still looking at: surveillance footage recorded from Smith's home. Police took the footage before the owner could look at it, but he hopes it will help the investigation.
"I just hope that it can make the neighborhood better, safer, you know,” Smith said. “Just help really get all this wrapped up and out of the way because I really hate seeing stuff like this happen in the neighborhood."
Police are asking that if you have any additional information that you please call Champaign County Crime Stoppers at (217) 373-TIPS.
