April is National Donate Life Month.

In honor of that, Secretary of State Jesse White unveiled his new advertising campaign monday to encourage people to become organ donors.

The campaign highlights a new law that allows 16 and 17 year olds to become organ donors.

Since the law went into effect at the start of the year, more than 11,500 teens have registered to be donors.

The secretary of state's office says this is a huge step forward in helping people get the organ transplants they need.

"In Illinois, we have 6.4 million people who have signed the registry, however 4,700 people are still waiting and about 300 people die every year because their organs don't arrive in a timely manner, so this really is a life or death issue," Deputy Press Secretary Henry Haupt said.

The digital, television and radio ad campaign will run in English and Spanish statewide throughout April, which is National Donate Life Month. It also will be played on more than 400 movie screens in Illinois.
