SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WRSP) -- Record breaking travel is expected this holiday weekend, with almost a third of Americans planning to travel for Christmas.
Here in Illinois, AAA estimates 5.3 million drivers on the road.
This has Illinois State Police on high alert.
Troopers are looking for three major violations; speeding, distracted driving, and driving under the influence.
"Our main goal is to get people from point a to point b safe. That's our primary goal out here. It's not to write x number of tickets, it's just to get people where they're going safely," said Sergeant Don Kovack, with Illinois State Police.
ISP said with the high volume of cars on the road, it’s even more important for drivers to follow the law.
“The last thing we want to do is to have to go to their family’s door and tell them that they were killed or seriously hurt in a crash because they were driving too fast or driving intoxicated or distracted while they were driving,” explained Kovack.
ISP will continue increased patrols throughout the week.
If drivers are caught violating the law, they will get a ticket.
