Lawmakers Calling to Legalize Midwives to Save on Medicare
Lawmakers are making a second attempt to legalize certified professional midwives across the state.
The practice was criminalized in 1987.
The home birth safety act would license certified midwives and standardize training, and is still being opposed by some doctors who say babies should be born in hospitals.
Supports say this act could save on Medicare would allow low-income women to hire mid-wives, which could lower medicaid costs.
