SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WICS/WRSP) -- A total of 11,000 oranges will be given to those in need this holiday season, thanks to a massive donation from local rotary clubs.
The Downtown Rotary Club and the Sunrise Rotary Club offers the community to donate fresh oranges to the Central Illinois Foodbank during their sale every year.
The fresh produce is welcomed by the food bank and provides a healthy option besides the typical non-perishable food items.
"The households that we serve - there's about 70 percent that have at least one family member that suffers from high blood pressure and about 36 percent that suffer with diabetes. So having access to fresh produce and nutritious food is something we always strive for," Public Relations Manager of the Central Illinois Foodbank Ashley Earnest said.
This is the 6th year the rotary clubs have offered the donation.
