Local teams gear up for Hurricane Florence relief
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WRSP) — The Illinois Baptist State Association has 1,700 volunteers on standby, specially trained to provide relief during these natural disasters.
Right now, they have three teams of volunteers ready to leave as early as Sunday morning.
The Association has a special disaster relief team that's helped in events like Hurricane Harvey and Superstorm Sandy. Right now they're making final preparations with a child care unit and a kitchen truck that can produce up to 25 thousand meals a day. They also have a chainsaw team to help strip down houses.
"In the heart of our volunteers who go and serve is a desire to help people who are in need,” said Dwayne Doyle, administrative director at Illinois Baptist Disaster Relief. “A lot of people respond because of what they see that god has done for them and so they go and give sacrificially to help people who can't help themselves in a moment."
Another unit being prepared is their shower unit truck, which provides shower and laundry stations for storm victims.
