Memorial weekend traffic: what to expect on the roads

If drivers are still looking to get out of town tonight, state police say the best time to travel is Saturday morning. (WCCU)

Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial kickoff to the summer.

Also, one of the busiest times to travel.

Illinois State Police warn drivers to be prepared for more traffic than normal this holiday weekend.

"We don't want to have any fatalities,” said Allen Jones, Chief Deputy at Champaign County Sheriff’s Office. “Certainty law enforcement will be out in full force. We will do what we can to keep everyone safe, but it takes a little bit of effort on everybody's part to make that happen."

State Police will be out looking for distracted and drunk drivers Memorial Day Weekend. They ask everyone to follow the law so it can be a safe weekend.

State Police said the best time to travel is Saturday morning.

On Sunday, State Police said the roads will be clear, but come Monday, traffic will hit again as people start traveling home.
