CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WICS/WCCU) — Two Champaign Police officers were shot early Wednesday morning.
One of the officers and the suspect who allegedly shot them have died.
The second officer is in stable condition.

The suspect accused of killing Officer Chris Oberheim — 24-year-old Darion M. Lafayette of Champaign — was killed in an apparent exchange of gunfire.
This wasn’t the first time Lafayette has been in trouble with the Champaign Police Department.

According to the Champaign County Circuit Clerk's Office, back in 2017, Lafayette faced charges of aggravated domestic battery - strangulation, domestic battery - physical contact, and criminal damage to property ranging from $500 to $10,000.
But that's only the beginning.
In July 2018, Lafayette was charged with possession of meth and possession of a controlled substance.
Then in 2019, Lafayette was charged with another aggravated domestic battery - strangulation charge, plus additional charges of domestic battery - bodily harm and endangering the life or health of a child.
