Officials: Crime could spike as temperatures heat up

It's that time of year where we're starting to see warmer temperatures.

The warmer weather brings more people out and about.

The Sangamon County Sheriff's Office said every year when the weather starts to get nice they see a rise in crime.

It's a problem law enforcement agencies across the country encounter.

"Not so many people are held up in their homes, they're actually out and about and doing things and when people are actually out and about we tend to see crime rates go up drastically," explained Sergeant Travis Dalby with the Sangamon County Sheriff's Office.

Officials said aren’t able to bring on more staff on these days, so it's about getting strategic.

This includes increasing patrols in areas prone to violence.
