Police are still looking for suspects after being called to the 900 block of Campbell Avenue early Saturday morning. The Champaign County Coroner confirms 25-year-old Gerald Taylor of Chicago died from a gunshot wound around 4:30 a.m.

As they interview potential witnesses, they’re also asking the public to come forward with any information.

"It's a campaign we've had here for sometime: see something say something and this is one of the biggest hurdles that we have to overcome,” Danville Public Safety Director Larry Thomason said. “Some of the incidents involving violence in the community that people just don't want to speak up for various reasons."

Those who live in Fair Oaks housing say they're concerned about the violence in their neighborhood, after several shootings this year alone. They think putting up gates around the community may offer a solution. The community does have surveillance cameras, but tenants say it's not enough.

"If you don't gate it up, there's going to be a thousand murders, there's going to be a thousand people trying to get up out of here,” Danville resident LaBonte Taylor said. “There's only one way in and one way out, that's why I think you should gate it up."

Police say neighbors also have a responsibility to report suspicious activity.

"If they feel like it's something wrong, something bad may happen, go ahead and call 911,” Director Thomason said. “Let police get to the area, let them check it out. Maybe their presence alone stops what may have occurred otherwise."

Police are asking that if you have any information you contact the Danville Police Department at (217) 431-2250 or Vermilion County Crime Stoppers at (217) 446-TIPS.1-2250 or Vermilion County Crime Stoppers at (217) 446-TIPS.
