Police make arrest, seek other victims in battery incident
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WICS/WCCU) —
Champaign Police Department, assisted by the United States Marshals Service Fugitive Task Force, arrested Carlos Draine, 26, of Champaign, on charges of aggravated battery and mob action at 10:15 a.m., July 10.
Draine was arrested for a July 8 battery that took place near the intersection of Second Street and Green Street in Champaign.
Police were called to that area at 2:04 a.m. for a reported fight, and after arriving on scene, located a 20-year-old unconscious male victim suffering from serious injuries consistent with a physical assault.
The victim was transported to an area hospital and has since been released.
No additional suspects or victims have been identified as of yet.
Investigation of the incident determined the confrontation escalated from a verbal disagreement. Police said video evidence shows Draine's physical assault against the victim and shows battery to several other nearby individuals who were not directly involved in the fight.
Although an arrest has been made, police are continuing to investigate the incident.
