Rantoul Police make arrest following fatal stabbing
A 21-year-old is dead and police have a suspect behind bars, but that only brings so much relief to those he left behind.
"He was a good friend, a loving dad,” Faith Nelson said. “A great brother, always there for people. You could always count on fate for anything. Like for anything."
Nelson and Fate Young have a two-year-old daughter, Nova. She was with him when he was stabbed at his apartment in the 1300 block of Harmon Drive.
"I was actually about to call him when his brother's baby's mother called me and told me that he got stabbed and my child was now in a car with someone waiting on me to come,” Nelson said.
Around 9 p.m. Thursday night neighbors said they heard someone yell “he’s dead” and ran outside.
"My boyfriend had seen him and he kind of ran in front of the dumpster,” neighbor Kylie Kennedy said. "He dug his feet almost like so the imprints of his feet wouldn't be in the snow. And he ran in and he ran back out and he took back off."
Now 26-year-old Jarvis Garrett is behind bars. Police said they believe he was either involved in the stabbing or knows something about it.
For now, Young's family waits for answers as police continue to investigate.
Nelson says she’s in disbelief over the whole situation.
"I mean, yeah, he would get into arguments, but he didn't have no enemies, not enough to kill him,” Nelson said. “He didn't have any enemies."
As police continue to investigate, they're asking anyone with information to come forward. Tips can be reported anonymously to Champaign County Crime Stoppers at (217) 373-TIPS. Tips that lead to an arrest are eligible for up to a $1,000 cash reward.
