A Springfield police officer was struck by a vehicle during a response call for service Monday.

The incident occurred at approximately 1:04 a.m. as officers were responding to a call in the 2300 block of East Pine Street.

Officers were standing near the edge of the roadway when a vehicle approached from the 2200 block of East Pine Street, striking one of the officers.

The injured officer, an 11-year veteran of the department, suffered a broken left foot and a broken right leg from the impact. He was treated and later released from HSHS St. John's Hospital in Springfield.

Police located the suspect soon after the incident and was identified as 56-year-old Richard Wanless, of Springfield. Following an investigative interview, Wanless was arrested and transported to Sangamon County Jail.

Wanless will appear in court Tuesday for a bond hearing.

The incident is still under investigation.
