Students honored through Martin Luther King Junior Celebration
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCCU) —
Champaign County honored future dreamers in its 17th annual Martin Luther King Junior Celebration.
The event showcased local students’ personal and professional dreams.
It was open to the public who applauded the students’ work.
Four students and two local groups received awards for service and leadership in the community.
"It's an amazing pat on the back and amazing push forward for me,” shared Centennial High School senior and award recipient Valena Greene. “I feel like it's so important to honor the youth and just make sure we know that what we're doing is amazing and to just keep going."
"Dr. King's dream was huge and so they get a chance to study the Dr. King's work and then to figure out how they can apply it in their own lives," State representative Carol Ammons said.
The keynote speaker's message was for adults to share their resources to help kids achieve their dreams.
