Suspect in Champaign officer's death identified

We now know the name of the man who may have shot two Champaign Police Officers Wednesday morning.

The suspect was fatally wounded during a shootout at Town Center Apartments around 3:24 a.m.

Champaign Officer Chris Oberheim was shot during the incident and later died at the hospital.

The second officer was shot and is now stable.

Champaign County Coroner Duane Northrup identified the suspect as 24-year-old Darion M. Lafayette, of Champaign.

Lafayette was pronounced dead around 6:40 a.m. at the scene of the shooting, 2400 block of North Neil Street.

Officer Oberheim was pronounced dead at 6:03 a.m. from a gunshot wound he received during the incident.

Autopsies are scheduled for Thursday.
