Thousands in Champaign celebrate Memorial Day outdoors
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCCU) —
Thousands of Champaign-Urbana community members spent Monday outdoors celebrating the unofficial start of summer and one of the warmest Memorial Days in recent years.
"Might be a little warm, but it's better than rain,” Champaign resident, Juanita Washington said.
The warm weather did not stop families from firing up the grill.
"It's a holiday that's important especially like for family time and with like being veterans in the family it's just important to celebrate with family,” Champaign resident, Alaea Francis said.
Champaign-Urbana parks and swimming pools were packed with families, as many celebrated to honor those who served.
"Memorial day is a special day for me because my uncle fought in World War II just as so many other veterans,” Washington said. “This special day should be an important day for anyone.”
