Urbana Police search for third suspect in morning shooting

2 men are behind bars after a shooting near the intersection of Cunningham and Oakland Avenues in Urbana at around 10:16 Tuesday morning, but police are still searching for a third suspect.

22-year-old Kendale Stevenson-Peoples of Champaign and 23-year-old Michael Smith of Chicago are facing charges of attempted murder and aggravated discharge of a firearm.

Officials said the two suspects were chasing another man south on Cunningham Avenue from Oakland Avenue while allegedly shooting at the victim.

A second victim of the shooting was walking with the man that was being shot at.

"We were just sitting here working and I went to go throw some stuff away in the dumpster and then all of a sudden we heard about 10 gunshots going off," witness, Jon Browder said.

Both victims were located in the area and neither was struck by the bullets. One of the shooting suspects was arrested in the 300 block of Highland by a Champaign County Sheriff's deputy and two Urbana police officers.

Another suspect was located near the intersection of Cunningham and Kerr. A third suspect was driving a brown Chevy van, escaped and has not yet been located and is who police are seeking.

Officials also found a handgun at the scene near the van. Both suspects were taken to the Champaign County Satellite Jail.
