Urbana School Board says new discipline structure can't be rushed
URBANA, Ill. (WCCU) —
Urbana School District is working on implementing a new structure for disciplining students after the district announced they are eliminating dean positions.
The school district said it will be a massive shift but will better support students in the long run.
During the school board meeting, board members said they worry the process is being rushed.
The goal is to have a new structure implemented by September before school starts.
Both the high school and middle school leaders presented plans for how their schools will move forward next year without deans.
The high school requested the school board approve its disciplinary plan changes.
The plan for the middle school has not been voted on yet.
Parents and teachers said there has been a lack of communication about the changes and worry that discipline problems will increasingly get worse if the new structure isn’t done right.
