A man who was found guilty of murder in June after shooting his girlfriend in her head while she was driving in October 2015 has been sentenced to prison for life.

Joseph Poteat was arrested about two weeks after the murder of Marquita Wimms.

Prince George's County Police said that emergency crews responded to the 1900 block of Rochelle Avenue in District Heights on the night of the murder after a car careened into an apartment building. Police said that Wimms, who had been driving, initially appeared to be trapped inside the car with critical injuries.

Wimms reportedly had one gunshot to the head and officials say Poteat, who was seen running away from the car, left a handgun at the scene.

Poteat was located and taken into custody on October 20, 2015.

Officials say that while Wimms and Poteat had been dating, "the exact motive for the shooting was unclear."

Poteat was found guilty of first-degree murder as well as using a "handgun in the commission of a crime of violence."
