WASHINGTON (TND) — Florida Sen. Marco Rubio is making his case for a congressional oversight committee to investigate the protests that rocked the country following the deaths of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor in 2020.
Some of the demonstrations — many of which started as peaceful protests — turned into looting and led to extensive damage to government buildings and businesses in several big cities.
“There has been no accountability about the summer of 2020, who was behind it, how much political rhetoric lent itself to it," Rubio said on Fox News. "So there’s a whole host of things that we can hold government agencies accountable for."
Rubio’s request comes after the Democratic-led House Select Committee spent enormous effort digging into the events surrounding Jan. 6.
Domestic terrorism is rising dramatically according to a report published earlier this year, particularly attacks related to demonstrations.
According to the findings, in 2020 most of the attacks related to demonstrations, 58%, were conducted by violent far-right perpetrators including white supremacists and militia members. In 2021 73% were orchestrated by the far left including anarchists and anti-fascists.
Catrina Doxsee, an associate director and associate fellow with the Center for Strategic and International Studies, worked on the report.
"It’s really important that the government has a uniform approach to rejecting extremist violence to rejecting acts of terrorism and to investigating events that occur that may meet the definition of terrorism," said Doxsee.
Rubio’s proposal is another investigation Republicans vow to look into should they regain control on congress on election day, along with a look into Hunter Biden’s business deals and Dr. Fauci's handling of the pandemic.
