Lawmakers are proposing new legislation to create a diaper allowance for Illinois families.

This is aimed at providing eligible families with a diaper allowance of $70 per month per eligible child.

You meet the requirements if your household income is at or below 100% of the poverty guidelines outlined by the US Department of Health and Human Services. You must be responsible for the welfare of a child three years old or younger.

"Diapers are extremely costly. This bill will allow single-parents, working families, low-income households, and people to benefit from the weight of this allowance and it will help families' budgets,"Sen. Karina Villa (D-Chicago), said.

The legislation said that the allowance may only be used to purchase diapers.

It also said the diaper allowance cannot be considered an income for purposes of determining eligibility or assistance for any public aid benefit under state law.

According to the Children's Home and Aid, in their two crisis nurseries in Rockford and Bloomington, they collected and provided over 66,000 diapers last fiscal year. They said within the last six months of this fiscal year, they are already ahead of that number.

This isn’t the only legislation aimed at helping Illinois families support their children.

Lawmakers are also looking to pass legislation on a child tax credit.
